Young Scientist Award / Young Poster Award
(For PSSJ Member)

It was 2008 Tokyo meeting that the Protein Science Society of Japan presented the first “Young Scientist Award” and “Poster Award” to young scientists who made excellent presentations at the meeting. At the 19th annual meeting, the society will chose 10 presentations for Young Scientist Award and 10 for Poster Award in the five fields of “Protein structure”, “Computation/Information science”, “Protein/Cellular functions, Imaging”, “Biophysics, Protein Folding” and “Proteomics / Protein engineering”.

Furthermore, a few recipients of the Young Scientist Award will be chosen for “Young Scientist Excellence Award”. The award recipients will be commended and given award certificates at the banquet of the annual meeting.

You can apply for the awards via the online abstract submission system. Your enthusiastic applications are highly welcomed. The recipients of the Young Scientist Award will be requested to contribute a review, experimental protocol or essay to the PSSJ Archives.


Young Scientist Award

Abstract submission period

February 1 (Fri) – February 15 (Fri), 2019

*The submission period for Young Scientist Award differs from the period for Poster Award.


Eligibility Requirements and Application Procedure

Applicants must meet the following requirements;

-Presenter of a poster presentation
- Under 40 years old as of April 1, 2019
-Regular member who is postdoctoral researcher, assistant professor, or in an quivalent position to those, or motivated student member

Regarding the annual membership fee, please make a payment for FY2019 (from April of 2019). It’s unnecessary to pay the fee for FY 2018 (until March of 2019).

Please note that past recipients of Young Scientist Award are not eligible.
At the selection, the younger scientists are more likely to be prioritized. However, the committee will properly consider the length of maternity and childcare leave. If it applies to you, please mention it in the CV which applicants will be asked to submit for confirmation of requirements later.
Applications are accepted on the website. There is no designated application form prepared. Please prepare your application documents in free format using figures and characters to appeal your research.

The recipients of Young Scientist Award will make a presentation at a “Young Scientist Award Symposium”.


Regular member applicants
If regular member applicants are not chosen for Young Scientist Award, their abstracts will be considered as standard poster presentation.

Student member applicants
If student member applicants are not chosen for Young Scientist Award, their abstracts will be considered as candidates of “Poster Award” automatically.


Selection

<Application document selection>
About 10 recipients of Young Scientist Award will be chosen based on application documents in advance. The scientific significance of the research is evaluated in the selection.

<Presentation selection>
The recipients of Young Scientist Award chosen based in the application document will be invited to make a presentation in English at the “Young Scientist Award Symposium”. Among them, a few will be chosen for Young Scientist Excellence Award based on the scientific significance of the research and the clarity of the presentation. A brief discussion time is planned after each presentation. Both English and Japanese can be used for the discussion time.


Poster Award

Abstract submission period

*The submission period for Poster Award differs from the period for Young Scientist Award.


Eligibility Requirements and Procedure

Applicants must be student member and presenter. (Regular members are not qualified.)

Regarding the annual membership fee, please make a payment for FY2019 (from April of 2019). It’s unnecessary to pay the fee for FY 2018 (until March of 2019).

Those who have been selected or applied for this award previously are eligible too. Applications are accepted on the website.


Selection

Selection will be made based on poster presentations and flash talks (1 minute* presentation with 1 slide for 1 presenter).
The scientific significance and the presentation technique are evaluated.

*Time allocation for flash talk may vary depending on the number of applicants.
